Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is designed to surgically improve the appearance as well the function (breathing) of the nose. The size of the nose as well as the shape of the nasal dorsum and tip may be modified by this procedure. Nasal deformities may be congenital, age-related (developmental) or trauma-induced. Our goal is to successfully reshape your nose and thus restore a harmonious facial balance. At times, chin correction may be indicated as an alternative or adjunctive.

Consultation

During the initial consultation your wishes and goals as well as possible reservations will be addressed in detail. Subsequently, a careful physical examination is conducted with particular emphasis on facial proportions and nasal function. Preoperative photographs are used for explaining the procedure in a step-by-step manner. Available procedures are then discussed including possible limitations and risks. Often a second consultation is necessary preoperatively. Our goal is to provide you with a realistic image of what you can expect from such a procedure. The extent and complexity of the procedure depends on individual factors such as nasal structure, skin thickness, age, and of course you wishes and desires.

Procedure

This procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia either on an out- or in-patient basis. Occasionally, surgery may be conducted under local anesthesia with sedation depending on the invasiveness of the procedure.

Most frequently an external approach is used for separating the skin from the bone and cartilage framework with subsequent sculpturing of these structures to achieve the desired result. With specialized instruments a nasal hump may be removed whenever indicated, a long nose may be shortened and the nasal tip reshaped. Occasionally, cartilage grafts may be used for additional structural support. After surgery a small plastic splint is usually placed for protection.

Postoperative Care

During the first several days cooling of the face for pain and swelling control is recommended. Stitches and the splint are usually removed within one week.

Most bruises resolve within one week. Subtle swellings may require several months to resolve completely. The final result may be appreciated within 6 months. Durable results may be obtained with resultant high levels of satisfaction and marked improvement of self-esteem.
